The promotion of equality for women in the legal profession is part of the ethical and professional responsibilities of all lawyers.  Much of the attention to this issue in recent years has been focused on the important question of the retention of women in private practice, which is usually linked to challenges in balancing the demands of practice and family responsibilities.  While these are important issues, they are not the only issues facing women lawyers throughout their career paths.   This panel will consider other ways in which gendered norms affect the opportunities for women lawyers.  These include expectations as to appearance, both for older and younger lawyers; the competitive culture of law firms; stereotypes of women in supporting rather than leadership roles, and the ways in which other identities (race, sexual orientation) intersect with these concerns.  Practical strategies and problem-solving will be emphasized.
