JC Smith was appointed to the Allard School of Law in 1961 and promoted to professor in 1969. He was a Visiting Professor, University of Sydney and guest professor at Osaka University. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1965. He was director of UBC's Artificial Intelligence Research Project at the Allard School of Law from 1989 to 2002.
