LLM and PhD Funding & Awards

Award Opportunities

The Peter A. Allard School of Law has a large and growing scholarship program. Each year we provide financial support for incoming and current research-based graduate students in recognition of their achievements. All incoming students are automatically considered for UBC scholarships and fellowships. Existing students are supported in their efforts to secure external funding.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies’ Award Opportunities database is an excellent place to start to find out what is available from UBC and many other external funding bodies.

The largest single funder of graduate students in Canada is the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Most of the funding it distributes is for Canadian citizens or permanent residents. However, some of its awards, including the prestigious Vanier Graduate Scholarship, are open to all students. Similarly, the Trudeau Doctoral Fellowship is open to domestic and international students.

The Law Foundation of British Columbia is providing Graduate Fellowships (up to 6 awards of $15,000 each) to incoming and continuing graduate students. Students at the Allard School of Law are eligible and must apply directly to the Law Foundation by January 31.

Applications for most external awards are due early in the Fall. They require extensive proposals and several letters of reference so please do not leave them until the last minute. Consult with your supervisor or other advisors to produce as strong of an application as possible.

Teaching Assistant Positions

The Allard School of Law offers opportunities for our research-based graduate students to work as teaching assistants in the JD legal research and writing program or as research assistants in grant supported research projects. Notice will be circulated when positions become available.

Internships

MITACS is a federally and provincially funded organization that helps to place graduate and postgraduate students in paid internship positions. Internship positions are posted on the website, but students can also work with employers to create internship positions that are partially funded by MITACS.

Conference and Research Travel Support

The Allard School of Law provides annual funding grants to full-time students in the LLM and PhD degree programs to support conference and research travel. You must apply to the Graduate Program in advance of your travel.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies provides graduate student travel support once per degree program. Please consult the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for application details.
