Dear Allard School of Law Alumni Community,
I hope that the New Year is well launched for all of you. Here at the Allard School of Law, we have begun the official countdown to our 75th anniversary in 2020, now just months away.
Much has changed since the law school opened its doors in 1945. Generations of alumni have become leaders in the legal profession, in business, in government, and in civil society - in the province, the nation, and around the world. We are enormously proud of our graduates, as well as being grateful for your exceptional on-going involvement in the law school.
As our countdown begins, here is a preview of some of the exciting initiatives we have planned for our celebratory year in 2020.
Gala Dinner and Awards Evening - Save the Date
Please save the date for a gala dinner and awards evening presented by the Allard Law Alumni Association. I invite you to join us in celebrating our many achievements over the past 75 years, and in dreaming big about the next 75 years. We will also be inviting classes who have a milestone reunion in 2020 to consider holding their reunion activities alongside the gala dinner.
Alumni Networking Opportunities
There will be many opportunities to connect with classmates, fellow alumni, faculty members and other friends and supporters of the law school. Celebrations will be taking place here in Vancouver and in cities around the world where our alumni live and work, beginning in Hong Kong in January 2020. We will also be celebrating 75 years of leading-edge scholarship through various academic initiatives and events that will be open to all alumni. An online events calendar will be launched this summer - stay tuned.
Time Capsule – Have your Say
Later this year Allard School of Law alumni, students, faculty and staff will be invited to submit ideas online and vote for items to include in our 75th anniversary time capsule. Items could range from textbooks to trike race costumes, to law school and university memorabilia. The possibilities are endless and we encourage creative submissions.
Law 75th Anniversary Alumni Bursary
At a time when our province and country are increasingly diverse, it is more important than ever for the legal profession to reflect the people it serves. The Allard School of Law is committed to ensuring that talented, principled, and motivated students are able to study here - whatever their financial circumstances.
The Allard School of Law has a relatively low tuition compared to other Canadian law schools. While this might seem to be an advantage for access to legal education, our tuition places very real limitations on our ability to offer student financial aid. We see no more momentous opportunity to provide students with the resources they need than our 75th anniversary. With your support, we will raise $1 million for student financial aid to mark this occasion. Our 75th anniversary is your opportunity to make a life-changing impact and to shape the future of the legal profession for generations.
Allard School of Law History Project
Thanks to a generous donation from Peter A. Allard, QC the law school has created an online historical archive to preserve its rich history. This archive includes oral histories as well as searchable information about former deans, professors, alumni and others who have made significant contributions to British Columbia’s legal history. It also includes information about important milestones for the law school. If you are interested in contributing a story or photo to our online archive, please click here.
Thank you to those alumni who have suggested ideas to make our upcoming anniversary especially meaningful. I am always eager to hear from our community so please do feel free to reach out to me to learn more about how you can support your law school and its future success.
